Among Moray Eels and Amphorae: The Greek-Norwegian Underwater Survey at the South Coast of Naxos

The project is a collaboration between the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports and administered by the Norwegian Institute at Athens. This project is underway and the presentation aims at giving an overview of the finds, methods used and preliminary results.
The project studies geographical and chronological patterns in harbors and wreckages from Antiquity and the medieval period along the South coast of Naxos between Alyko and Panormos. Our team has located two harbors, two anchorages and several ancient wrecks in the surveyed area, dating overwhelmingly to the Archaic to Mid-Byzantine period.
The finds particularly raise the questions on the function of the sites and their integration into the infrastructure of the hinterland at that thinly settled stretch of coast. The choice of some sites and the disuse of others is approached with a Fetch analysis. Ceramic studies aim at reconstructing trade patterns and sea routes. Volume calculations of ballast are further used to understand the activity at Panormos.

A reception will follow on the premises of the Norwegian Institute at Athens, Tsami Karatasou 5, 5th floor, Koukaki.
